For someone that is just starting out with aromatherapy, the staggering variety of different essential oils that are available for purchase online can be absolutely mind-boggling. Unfortunately, when I was first starting out, I made the costly mistake of thinking I needed to order a whole bunch of different oils to incorporate aromatherapy into my daily life. I had no idea how versatile each of these oils are! I wrote this blog post in hopes that I can save other aromatherapy beginners from making the same mistake I did (and hopefully save them a few dollars in the process)! If I had to do it over again, these would be the oils I would start my collection with.
-
- Lavender (Lavandula Angustafolia) – I love Lavender because it is a very calming, soothing aroma, and it is one of the most versatile essential oils available. Lavender can be used for acne, depression, eczema, insomnia and even bug bites! This oil is safe to use around children – my kids love the aroma of Lavender essential oil.

- Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus Radiata or Globulus) – Eucalyptus is an oil you will want to have on hand when cold season hits! It can help coughing, migraines, sinusitis and has antiseptic properties, too! **Use caution when using Eucalyptus essential oil, it should not be placed near the faces of infants or children under 10 years of age.
- Tea Tree (Melaleuca Alternifolia) – Tea tree is great for cleaning around the house, it is like a 3-in-1 workhorse! It has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties (along with many others).
- Peppermint (Mentha Piperita) – Peppermint is very energizing and invigorating, making it a great addition to blends to make you feel more alert and energized. It has cooling, analgesic and antispasmodic properties that make it a great addition in muscle blends.
- Roman Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis/Matricaria Chamomilla) – Roman Chamomile, also known as “blue chamomile,” is a very versatile oil and can be used for many things such as allergies, burns, insomnia and pain relief.
- Sweet Orange (Citrus Sinensis) – Sweet Orange oil is a familiar, soothing orange scent that is a little more concentrated than the aroma of an orange peel by itself. Sweet Orange blends well with many oils and if you love fruity aromas; it smells amazing when blended with the other citrus oils – I love to use it in my natural cleaning blends!
