Essential Oil Injury Reports

The following reports help to stress the importance of safe essential oil usage. It is necessary to follow the safety guidelines at all times – regardless of the brand of essential oil – to reduce the risk of injury or harm to yourself or others while using essential oils.

While essential oils may be all-natural, that does not mean they cannot cause harm. Essential oils are extremely concentrated substances, and if used incorrectly, injury can ensue as is shown in the graphs below.

How to Report an Essential Oil Injury

  • If an essential oil or product containing essential oils is ingested; call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away. There is also an online tool you can use for guidance if you prefer. They will help you figure out if this could be dangerous and will tell you exactly what to do.
  • MedWatch is the program the FDA uses to report problems; you can report your injury online by clicking here
  • To help make the Aromatherapy community more aware of risks and hazards with essential oils; the Atlantic Institute of Aromatherapy collects data on essential oil injuries. You can access the form here.
